Societies have always placed a great responsibility and great trust in the hands of those who dedicated themselves to guard health and disease. In Spain to be doctor must have a flawless resume, can only access the university's best students. This illustrates the importance that our culture gives to knowledge and intelligence, and also the difficulty in fairly evaluating other non-quantifiable skills such as creativity, communication skills, empathy, conscience, other intelligences (emotional, motor, artistic ...) and so on.
I know that many people with genuine vocation or a gift for the care and healing fall outside the official channels.
And I wonder, where are then the healers?, "In the health system, out of it?
If I look at my office and my fellow physicians see bureaucracy, civil servants, welfare overload, hurry, much computer and little eye contact, paper, glue, waiting lists ... I see excellent professionals with an avalanche buried stupidity (outdated prescription system, parts of preventable low, certificates and papers that would place an administrative computer systems negligent managers who do not respond to these problems ...). I see a few healers.
Maybe that's why we let her hands to her head when people look to other paradigms solution to their problems. The patient needs a healer, someone who accompany him, and some counseling ease in his time of illness. The public health system should remember every day. Managers to allow health professionals to do so. Health professionals to live our true vocation. Patients to demand compliance.
